Publix GreenWise Market #1721 - Tampa, FL
It's 2024 here on the GTB Area Retail Blog, so let's start off the new year with a look at the relocated Publix GreenWise Market in Tampa!
Publix GreenWise Market #1721
555 Channelside Drive, Tampa, FL
Opened on August 19, 2021 as the second GreenWise store in the Tampa area following store 1182 in Hyde Park, which has been a regular Publix since July 2019. Officially part of the Water Street district, this store is 26,000 square feet and is connected to the Heron apartment complex.
The first of the redesigned GreenWise Markets debuted at store 1573 in Tallahassee on October 4, 2018. Some notable changes from the original GreenWise Markets is a smaller store size between 25,000 and 30,000 square feet in addition to having an on-site bar called POURS. Since Publix no longer constructs new GreenWise Markets, this Tampa store was officially the 8th and final location to open with that name. A 9th location in Saint Augustine became a regular Publix during construction and that store (#1729) opened on October 6, 2022, delayed from September 29th due to Hurricane Ian.
On May 19, 2023, Publix announced that the newer GreenWise Markets will be converted to regular Publix stores beginning later this year, and store 1573 reopened as a regular Publix on February 19, 2024.
This store has two entrances, one on the street as seen here, and another in the parking garage.
Signage for the Publix GreenWise Market parking garage, which is also used for parking in the Heron apartments above.
The secondary entrance into the GreenWise Market from the parking garage on level 2. You can take either one of the 3 elevators or a set of stairs down one floor in order to enter the store.
To the right of the entrance doors is signage to the GreenWise Market elevators on a green-colored block wall.
These are two out of the three elevators and the set of stairs that I mentioned earlier. The elevators are the Evolution 200 model from TK Elevator and have large capacities of 5000 pounds or 2268 kilograms. The "2R" sign on the sides of the elevator doors means level 2, rear door.
At the first floor, this set of doors will take us inside the Tampa GreenWise Market.
The store's customer service desk is seen to the left after entering. Checkouts 5 and 6 also double as express lanes, which is an interesting placement for express checkouts in a Publix.
Aisle 1 has grab and go products.
Produce and the EATS departments are found on the other side of aisle 1, with this area having a similar layout to Publix's 55M stores. This part of EATS houses prepared foods.
Traditional deli items are found in the second section of EATS.
At the rear of the store are the dairy and CUTS departments. Grocery aisles are to the left.
An example of one of the aisle signs used, with the number also containing a picture of an item. Compared to regular Publix's, the aisle signs are in one direction only.
Overhead signage and products in the CARE department.
One half of aisle 5 is part of the CARE area, while the other half has frozen foods.
POURS and FINDS take up the front left corner. POURS is the store's café and bar, while FINDS has specialty foods, beer, and wine.
Aisle 6, which is the last aisle in this GreenWise Market, continues frozen foods in addition to having paper and grilling prep products, such as wood pellets, charcoal, and match lights.
At the rear of aisle 6 is the meat counter, known in GreenWise Market terms as CUTS.
Here are the store's checkouts with 4 regular lanes, 6 self-checkouts, and 2 express lanes in customer service.
As we prepare to exit, the elevators and restrooms come into our view.
Here is one last look at the elevators in this GreenWise Market.
This is what I got to eat after leaving the GreenWise Market, a cup of macaroni and cheese from the EATS area. I also had an 11.5-ounce bottle of Simply Lemonade to drink.
And here is one of the paper bags used, with the phrase "Eat Well" describing GreenWise Markets as an organic grocery store.

An update to this post: On August 28, 2024, this store was officially converted into a regular Publix, bringing an end to the Tampa GreenWise Market after 3 years and 9 days, along with a combined 14 years if you include the original GWM (now Publix #1182) in Hyde Park. The store number (1721) remains the same.
