Publix and Home Centric: Brandon, FL (Bloomingdale)

When you think Publix, you might think of green and gray, but this post has something different for the new stores! Also includes the Home Centric as a bonus.

A parting image of the two Publix stores, the new one (1681) and the old (315).

Publix #1681 shown 4 days before opening. We will get to that store after we visit the old one.

Former Publix #315/Future LA Fitness
855 E. Bloomingdale Ave, Brandon, FL. - Bloomingdale Square

This Publix opened in 1986 along with Walmart as another primary anchor. Store 315 closed on January 15, 2020 after 34 years at this location. This store's last remodel was Bamboo in 2011, replacing the Kiwi interior.

This store's outside look is all 1980's. When LA Fitness opens, the 1980's look will be removed in favor of a more modern look.

Enter here for the final photos of store 315, taken in March 2019, May 2019, and January 2020.

The walkway is all 1980's, so this is a single vestibule store.

As in all 1980's Publix stores, customer service is placed to the left of the restrooms.

Aisle 1 is split between regular groceries and the dairy department.

The Publix Deli, complete with the standard 1980's design.

Aisle 3, with a higher ceiling above the grocery aisles, which runs until aisle 10.

Notice the newer wine sign at the end of aisle 3.

Aisle 4, with the deli department in the background.

Service window for the meat department, even with repainted Publix wood paneling!

Off to aisle 9, we find drinks and school supplies in this aisle.

An old Publix is better with these historic images. These images were not saved in the new store, at least that I have another image!

Even though that this Publix was either built before or after the pharmacies opened, this store did not get one until 2017.

This photo clearly shows the difference in ceiling height, as seen on aisle 10.

Coffin coolers, seafood department, and produce! Seen at the end of aisle 12.

The small section of the bakery in the 1980's era of Publix...

Aisle 13 is the first frozen foods aisle. Seafood can also be seen in the background.

Produce has it's own area shared with aisle 14 in the back of the store.

Aisle 14 is the last aisle in store 315 and in frozen foods. The bakery is also visible.

And now to the 1990's with Publix's Deco Coral interior, taken from the opposite side.

Store 315's front end, with a total of 7 checkouts and 2 express lanes.

As seen from the checkouts, here is the left side of the middle aisle or section.

Thank you for shopping at Publix #315 for the last 34 years.

The back of the checkouts, as seen when you enter the store. I just wanted to include this picture before we move on to the new store.

Exit through these doors to fast forward to the new Publix, coming up next!

Here is a 2006 aerial photo showing the 3 grocery stores along the corner of Bell Shoals and Bloomingdale. The older Publix logo represents the original store 315. The newer Publix logo (circle P) represents store 1681. The Sweetbay Supermarket logo is for the Kash n' Karry building.

Former Walmart #941 (first location)/Publix #1681
949 E. Bloomingdale Ave, Brandon, FL. - Bloomingdale Square

Originally opened as Walmart #941 in 1986, along with the Publix. Walmart closed on March 8, 2016 to relocate to a new Supercenter near Lithia Pinecrest Road. After 3 years of vacancy, construction started in February 2019 to build a new Publix and a Home Centric.

The abandoned Walmart building, before construction of the new Publix.

And the same building, shown during Publix's grand opening.

This new store is 48,387 square feet compared to 34,200 square feet for the former Publix.

Welcome (to your Publix), this large sign greets you as you enter.

This is also Publix's new interior, which is named Evergreen.

Here is the Sienna welcome sign for comparison.

Coming in through the enter doors and turning right, you see customer service.

In these 48M stores, the deli is placed in an island, rather than sharing the deli space with the bakery.

The layout of this store is very similar to the 28M Publix stores, with produce in the grand aisle, followed by meat and seafood.

Newer seafood counter and signage.

Aisle 4, with Publix's newer aisle signs. The second floor mezzanine is home to a break area and dining room for employees and guests.

Aisle 8 is home to frozen foods.

Example of a newer Publix aisle sign.

For comparison, the older Publix aisle signs, seen in store 1456.

Groceries to the left, and the pharmacy department to the right, along with health and beauty items.

The store's thank you sign is located after the health/beauty department ends, and to the right of the restrooms.

Store 1681's 14 checkouts with 8 regular lanes, 6 self-checkouts, and 2 express lanes.

This Publix even has it's own elevator for the seating area! Installed in 2019.

You might think that this photo was taken by an employee, but it was taken by myself!

What is going to be a future Publix liquor store in this empty space.

Home Centric #143
941 E. Bloomingdale Ave, Brandon, FL. - Bloomingdale Square

Opened on November 28, 2019, and was originally a part of former Walmart store #941 and a Payless Shoes.

Home Centric's storage department. This is essentially the home version of a Bealls Outlet.

The lighting section of Home Centric.

To the left of the main entrance is home accents.

New treasures are arriving every week, so hurry back soon!

And now for the road signs, this is prior to 2020...

And the updated product!

  1. Great photos of the new décor, and before and after post in general! I also would be very interested in obtaining the link to those flickr photos with the old Wavy Pastel décor...

  2. Very impressed with this new Publix. I love all the options.

  3. You might notice that I put a box around 1681 in the Google Earth photo. This was done to correct an error in the Publix store number (original was store 1666), hence the "2.1" in Bell Shoals Rd.
